Kathmandu wears visitors down faster than most capitals: the traffic, the dust, and the sheer density of things to look at in the old city. The valley around it, though, is full of places an hour away that are quieter, older and in several cases better preserved. Anyone who can find Kathmandu flight deals on Traveloka should build two or three of these into the week rather than treating the city as a single block. Bhaktapur Thirteen kilometres east and the best-preserved of the valley’s three royal cities. The Durbar Square, the five-tiered Nyatapola temple and the surrounding lanes of brick and carved timber survived the 2015 earthquake better than Kathmandu’s equivalent and have been substantially restored since. Vehicles are largely kept out, which alone makes it worth the trip. Allow a full day and stay for the king curd. Patan Technically contiguous with Kathmandu across the Bagmati, Patan still feels separate. Its Durbar Square is the most architecturally coherent in the valley, and the Patan Museum inside the old palace is the single best explanation of Newar religious art anywhere in Nepal. The surrounding streets remain a working metalworking district, with courtyard workshops casting statues as they have for centuries. Nagarkot for the mountains Thirty-two kilometres east on a ridge at two thousand metres, Nagarkot exists almost entirely so people can see the Himalaya at dawn. On a clear morning the view runs from Dhaulagiri to Everest. Clear mornings are the catch: October to December is the reliable window. Most visitors stay overnight rather than attempt the drive before sunrise. Pharping and Dakshinkali South of the city, this pair gives you the valley’s religious life without the crowds. Dakshinkali is an active sacrifice temple, busiest and most confronting on Saturdays. Pharping above it holds Tibetan monasteries and a self-arisen rock image of Tara. Together they are a half day, and almost no tour buses go there. Changu Narayan The oldest temple in the valley, on a hill between Bhaktapur and Nagarkot, with stone carvings dating to the fifth century. It is small, often empty, and sits at the top of a short walk through farmland from the road. Easy to combine with Bhaktapur in one outing and frequently skipped entirely, which is why it is pleasant. Practical notes Taxis will do any of these as a half or full day for a negotiated rate; local buses are cheaper and considerably slower. Entrance fees at Bhaktapur and Patan are charged separately and are not trivial. October and November give the clearest air and the best mountain views. Traveloka offers the lowest flight prices in the region, which makes Kathmandu a reasonable short add-on to a longer Asian routing. Take Bhaktapur as a full day, pair Patan with an afternoon, and go to Nagarkot only if the forecast is genuinely clear. The valley is where the architecture survived best, and all four trips run on the same negotiated taxi rate. Agree the waiting time with the driver before you set off, not when you want to leave.
